Law Society Legal News Summary 28 August 2024

Confidence in justice system

Today’s Family Lawyer reports on our reaction to a new report which shows that victims are losing faith in the justice system.

President Nick Emmerson said: “It is disappointing but unfortunately not surprising that victim confidence in the criminal justice system is so low.

“Decades of devastating cuts and underfunding have left the system on the brink of collapse.

“Victims, witnesses and defendants are left in limbo for years waiting for trials to come to court because of the huge backlog of cases. Some courtrooms are crumbling, there are not enough lawyers and judges and prisons and probation are overwhelmed.

“We want UK government to work proactively to protect and secure access to justice and make our justice system a source of pride again.”

Cybersecurity in law firms

European Business Magazine and Legal Futures covers cybersecurity in the legal profession and the need for government protection against future cyber-attacks. According to the Law Society, 65% of law firms have been victims of cyber incidents.

Asian Achievers Awards

Leicester Times, Pukaar News and South Wales Argus continue coverage of the Asian Achiever Awards, where immediate past president Lubna Shuja will sit on the judging panel.
