Apprenticeships and the SQE

Charles Peter, founder of Datalaw, writes in the Gazette about the future of legal training, and focuses on solicitor apprenticeships and the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE).

He cites our 2011 report which found that only 25% of people who did a law degree could get a training contract, meaning that three-quarters of those who invested time and money into a law degree found themselves unable to progress in their chosen career path through conventional means.

This was one of the reasons for the Solicitors Regulation Authority to make changes to how solicitors qualify.

Legal aid crisis

LawCareers.Net reports that the Criminal Bar Association has raised the threat of industrial action as the criminal legal aid funding dispute continues.

It cites our advice to solicitors to withdraw or scale back their legal aid services until the UK government takes meaningful action.
