Bill of Rights Bill

Special Guardianship Orders
Family Law Week (£) continues coverage of the Law Society’s response to the expansion of legal aid for Special Guardianship Orders. We welcome the expansion to legal aid but urge the government to make legal aid for Special Guardians non-means tested so that grandparents on pensions can afford legal help.
Vice President Nick Emmerson said: “It is better for the child and better financially for the public purse if an SGO can be arranged and making legal aid for special guardians non-means tested would help achieve this.”
Coronation protest arrests
Stuart Nolan, Chair of the Law Society Criminal Law Committee, spoke to BBC Birmingham (from 02:38:04) about the impact that new measures to the Public Order Bill had on coronation protest arrests this weekend.
Scott Bowen, member of the Law Society Criminal Law Committee, also spoke to BBC Wales (from 01:08:19) about the debate that these arrests stirred regarding the new law.
Backlog for Power of Attorney
Sheree Green, member of the Law Society Mental and Disability Committee, spoke to the Daily Mail and This is Money about the unprecedented backlog for Power of Attorney applications.
Sheree commented: “If a person has lost capacity while applying for a power of attorney then you can apply to the Court of Protection, but this is a relatively complex procedure, and is not a solution if the person still has capacity.”
